Joana Leandro Vasconcelos (Porto, 1979) holds a degree from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) and a Master’s in “Collective Housing” from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSAM-UPM).
She began her career at Manuel Correia Fernandes, Arquitectos e Associados (mcf.a&a), and at GAIURB – Urban and Landscape Management of Gaia, where she worked on urban rehabilitation projects and on the revision of the Gaia Municipal Master Plan.
In 2007, she founded Atelier in.vitro, an architecture studio focused on the rehabilitation of built heritage.
She is co-founder of APRUPP – the Portuguese Association for Urban Rehabilitation and Heritage Protection, and of “4000 Ateliers,” a collective that promotes events related to architecture practices. She is also a member of the Heritage College, Gecorpa – the Heritage Guild, INTBAU, and ICOMOS, reflecting her active involvement in the professional community and her commitment to promoting traditional architecture and preserving heritage.
Author of various publications and presentations, her work has been widely recognized and awarded, including the Nuno Teotónio Pereira Prize (2019), the National Urban Rehabilitation Prize (2019), and the João de Almada Prize (2017). She has also received Honourable Mentions in the National Urban Rehabilitation Prize (2022 and 2019), the National Timber Architecture Prize – PNAM (2021), and the Nuno Teotónio Pereira Prize (2016). She was also a finalist for the Gulbenkian Heritage Prize – Maria Tereza and Vasco Vilalva (2022) and the Concreta Prize – Under 40 (2019).
Her career demonstrates a deep commitment to valuing architecture as a cultural practice, with a strong focus on preserving and valuing built heritage for future generations.
