Zukunft Bestand in Regionen: Eco-social Transformation of Detached Houses

Zukunft Bestand in Regionen is a project commissioned by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund (Klima- und Energiefonds) to promote the ecological renovation of detached houses (including single-family homes) in rural regions by directly addressing homeowners.

Using an existing case study, the project demonstrates that an eco-social transformation can significantly lower CO2 emissions in both renovation and operation compared to conventional renovation, demolition and reconstruction and operation of an unrenovated building.

The project also presents three prototypical renovation scenarios – small, medium, large – in which the case study house is transformed into a home for one family, for multiple generations and for multiple families. Thereby, the project points out alternatives to the common practice of demolition and reconstruction.

Zukunft Bestand in Regionen also proposes an easily comprehensible “manual” of specific measures to comprehensively improve houses, gardens, and mobility. The project furthermore offers context on planetary boundaries, climate crisis, CO2 emissions, and the building sector as well as on vacancy and underuse of homes, land use and demolition waste.

In this context, the project’s life cycle analyses clearly show the scope of action homeowners have.

Zukunft Bestand in Regionen was published as a booklet in 2026 in collaboration with a Climate and Energy Model Region and is available to the public online and in print.
