Zukunft Bestand: Eco-social Transformation of Housing Complexes

Zukunft Bestand is a holistic concept for the ecological and socially inclusive renovation of existing housing complexes. A “toolkit” of specific measures comprehensively improves buildings, green spaces, and mobility for the long term. The focus is on climate protection, climate resilience, circularity and social inclusion.
Zukunft Bestand was published as a book by Ruby Press in 2024 with the support of the Austrian Science Fund FWF and the Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture. The publication presents the hypothetical transformation of two existing housing complexes in Vienna and Upper Austria as a template for renovation projects and thereby for the rapid and holistic improvement of the existing housing stock.
Zukunft Bestand was implemented in a transdisciplinary research-and-design project in 2025-26 with the support of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG. The project proposes the eco-social transformation of three existing housing complexes in Vienna and Upper Austria as a basis for planning and construction as well as for the further development of the concept. The project demonstrates the concept’s capacity to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in both renovation and operation while creating additional housing, improving climate resilience, barrier-free accessibility, biodiversity, communal facilities and climate-friendly mobility.
Zukunft Bestand is winner of EU’s Green at Heart and selected as a top Austrian climate startup by Greenstart of the Climate Fund.
