The Garden of Freedom

Garden of Freedom is a public landscape project located in the historic centre of Kielce, Poland, forming the entrance zone to the former synagogue. Situated between two heavily trafficked urban arteries, the project addresses the challenge of creating a high-quality public space within an environment dominated by traffic, noise and fragmented urban structures.
The project transforms a neglected urban corridor into a green space of transition, connecting everyday city life with the cultural significance of the former synagogue. Conceived as the first stage of a broader revitalisation process, it establishes a framework for the future development of the area as a place of dialogue, education and intercultural exchange.
A clear spatial structure guides visitors towards the historic building through pathways, planting zones and integrated seating elements. Custom-designed architectural concrete structures function simultaneously as seating, spatial markers and acoustic buffers, creating comfortable spaces for rest, contemplation and social interaction. Their modular geometry creates a coherent visual identity while allowing future integration of educational and multimedia components.
Ecology was a key driver of the design process. The project introduces climate-resilient planting, low-maintenance vegetation and water-permeable paving adapted to demanding urban conditions. Permeable surfaces support natural rainwater infiltration, reduce runoff and improve local water management. Extensive planting enhances biodiversity, improves the microclimate and mitigates the impact of surrounding traffic infrastructure. Universal accessibility principles ensure that the space is welcoming to users of all ages and abilities.
Garden of Freedom demonstrates how landscape architecture can transform a difficult urban site through strategic design, ecological solutions and carefully integrated public amenities, creating the foundation for the long-term revitalisation of the city.
