Iskra Lekovska

The Church of Sts. Constantine and Helena built in the center of Skopje was designed for an international competition organized by the Ministry of Culture of the R. Macedonia in 2008. Winning the competition enabled architect Iskra Lekovska, to lead the realization of one of the most significant contemporary Orthodox churches.
Beyond the urban, functional, engineering, and canonical requirements, the main challenge to overcome was moving forward with a new approach, even knowing it evolves gradually, slowly and in parallel with other Orthodox arts as painting, singing, clothing, interior, etc.
The author uses structural systems, technological envelopes and construction in correlation with timeless geometry and material authenticity, so tradition and innovation become mutually inclusive.
A feminine aesthetic has been absent from both the urban environment and Orthodox architecture, throughout history and this sensibility is so needed in the public space.
Participating in such complex architectural processes requires excellence not only in design, artistic vision, engineering expertise but also a deep understanding of cultural and spiritual context. Every aspect of this architectural work is non-standard—from the spatial and structural conception, to the design of the façade, iconostasis, crosses, and the finest architectural details. Each element demands a profound understanding of materials, construction methods, and the capabilities of local building traditions and craftsmanship.
The completed building stands as a rare example of a monumental Orthodox Church designed by a female architect and successfully realized within a highly conservative ecclesiastical environment.
Orthodox architecture is timeless. The church is a pause. In this chaotic world it creates a space of stillness. The author transforms prayer into matter, and uses proportions that clearly reveal the building's origins as a Macedonian Orthodox Church, deeply rooted in Macedonian memory.
