Multi aged community center

The building, built in 2015 in Poggio Picenze in the province of L'Aquila is dedicated to three children, young victims of the 6th April 2009 earthquake. The Center covers about 240 square meters net internal: there are the entrance hall, two multipurpose rooms, the library with Internet stations, one music room, and, besides, services, a store room and both open and covered spaces.
Thanks to the solidarity of many Italian citizens, and thanks to the tenacity, which characterized all the actors involved in the building process, it was possible to complete, in just one year, a new community gathering place for one hundred and thirty people in a territory still marked by the devastating earthquake. The singer Barbarossa, president of the Nazionale Cantanti, one of the main contributors together with the readers of La Provincia di Como Lecco e Sondrio, Salvadanaio per L'Abruzzo and the municipality of Poggio Picenze, pointed out that "The true Italy is the one that has contributed to the project for Abruzzo".
The design intent of the new complex is to revise the work the “Grande Cretto” by Burri, built in Gibellina between 1985 and 1989, following the earthquake of Belice (1968) and realized in white concrete. The building, whose design began in 2011, two years after the earthquake, commemorates the destructive event with its zigzag shape, but at the same time, it wants to inspire, with its green (and wooden) facades and roof, hope for the future both in nature and humankind in all the users who should take care of the building. The work, the appearance of which will change at every season thanks to the vegetation covering the facades with red flowered clematis twisted around the climbing ropes, celebrates the cycle of life and wants to remember the courage of the parents who, digging with their bare hands in the ruins, have saved not only their children, but also those of others.
