“A timber kindergarten that merges the potential of its site with the demands of contemporary pedagogy.”

The new eight-group kindergarten on the ISTA campus in Maria Gugging sets a benchmark for the integration of high-performance energy standards with spatial quality. Positioned at the northern edge of the campus, the building opens southwards toward the surrounding landscape, establishing a strong relationship with its natural context. Access is provided via the newly created “Zwergenweg,” leading to a laterally positioned entrance with a generous vestibule that acts as a transitional threshold into the kindergarten. The immediate connection to nature supports early childhood development, stimulates the senses, and fosters an awareness of ecological relationships.

Timber is the defining material throughout. Its tactile and sensory qualities, combined with a sustainable construction approach, create a holistic environment that brings together architecture, pedagogy, and ecology. The group rooms are organized across the building depth, each benefiting from distinct spatial qualities and accessed via individual transition zones.
On both floors, a dedicated quiet room offers an essential retreat space and can be flexibly connected to adjacent group areas. Generous operable glazing and covered terraces extend the interior into the outdoor realm, enabling a seamless transition between inside and outside.
The building is conceived as both a passive house and a plus-energy building, achieving the highest ecological and energy standards while providing a healthy indoor climate for its youngest users with 1000 points and the klima aktiv gold standard. (competition winner 2023, realised in 2025)
