Women in Architecture Initiative

Milena Zindović

Initiated by architect Milena Zindović and centered around the online platform zua.rs, "Women in Architecture" (Žene u arhitekturi) is a comprehensive initiative dedicated to the promotion, research, and celebration of women's creativity in the architecture of Serbia and Montenegro. Through various mediums, the project brings long-overdue visibility to the female professionals who have significantly shaped the region's built environment.
A foundational element of the initiative is the publication of the awarded book "Women in Architecture : Contemporary Architecture in Serbia since 1900," edited by Zindović. The project’s impact expanded significantly in 2016 with the exhibition "Her Circle" (Njen krug), in collaboration with a similar project from Novi Sad, showcasing women's architectural achievements to audiences in Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Paris. This discourse was further deepened in 2018 when the Museum of Applied Art in Belgrade hosted the notable event "Women's Creativity in Architecture and Design: European and Local Context," organized in collaboration with the European project MoMoWo.
Beyond academic circles, the project strongly focuses on education and public engagement. To mark International Women's Day in 2019, in collaboration with UN Women and the Women's Architectural Society, commemorative markers and QR codes were placed on Belgrade university and school buildings designed by women. Additionally, specialized guided architectural walks invite the public to explore the city through the lens of its female builders, while the awarded children's workshop "Women Builders of Belgrade" introduces these concepts to younger generations. Through these diverse activities, the project actively redefines the contemporary cultural narrative, ensuring the legacy of women architects endures.
