the wienerwaldgymnasium in tullnerbach, austria, is surrounded by forest and nature. the steep slope and height restrictions are solved with a terraced building stepping down four levels to the south, creating generous terraces on every floor. the structure cantilevers above the parking area, making space for a large outdoor sports field.
inside, the school is organised around a four-storey auditorium as its central meeting point. the clear layout ensures easy orientation and short routes. different zones provide space for learning, relaxing, playing and events, creating a shared indoor campus for students and teachers.
the entrance level contains the staff room, kitchen and dining area, library, administration, multi-purpose hall, music room and after-school care facilities. a large reading staircase connects to the lower floor with rooms for art, crafts and science, as well as the gymnasium and movement room. classrooms are located on the two upper floors: 19 rooms for lower secondary and 13 rooms for upper secondary. movable partition walls allow flexible room combinations for exams or group use.
a key element of the concept is the extension of learning spaces into the outdoors. terraces, green areas, seating steps, open-air classrooms and balconies connect interior and exterior spaces. the auditorium, library, dining area, multi-purpose hall and care facilities can open onto covered outdoor zones. the design promotes openness, clarity, connectivity and bright welcoming spaces with smooth transitions between inside and outside. regular movement between indoor and outdoor areas supports health and wellbeing, while outdoor teaching can take place near classrooms or in the surrounding forest.
materials were selected for sustainability, low co2 emissions and durability. external shading, roof overhangs and balconies improve comfort, protect façade and reduce maintenance.
