An exemplary transformation of cultural heritage into a new life cycle
The transformation of the Water Engineering Hall by Professor Ernst Neufert addresses one of the central questions of contemporary architectural practice: How can significant existing architecture be preserved in its historical and spatial value while simultaneously enabling a viable future use?
The design approach regards the existing building not as a constraint to be overcome, but as the fundamental basis of the architectural intervention. The robust industrial structure is respected and serves as the framework for a precise and restrained continuation that accommodates new functional requirements without compromising the original spatial logic.
At the heart of the project lies a sensitive relationship between the existing fabric and contemporary additions. New insertions and technical upgrades are intentionally articulated as contemporary layers, remaining clearly distinguishable without competing with the historic substance.
This approach creates a dialogue between past and present that does not overwrite the history of the place, but rather extends and enriches it.
The adaptive reuse strategy follows the principle of maximum preservation with minimal intervention.
This represents not only an ecological commitment, but also a cultural one, granting the existing structure renewed relevance within a contemporary context of use. The spatial generosity of the hall is preserved and carefully activated to support new forms of occupation and experience.
The Water Engineering Hall thus becomes an example of an architecture of transformation and continuation—one that recognizes the value of existing structures and, through precise interventions, translates them into a contemporary future.
