Volksschule Asperhofen

Sybille Caspar

Asperhofen is a village with approximately 2.200 inhabitants in Lower Austria north of Neulengbach.
The new elementary school of Asperhofen is in the center next to the church. We tried to adopt the
old structure of the village character and placed the gym in opposite of the school building, where
the space in-between become a forecourt and meeting point. The educational concept and new working methods require open and flexible floor plans. The spaces between the classrooms are not simply corridors, they are so called “marketplaces„ and places to work in groups. The doors of the classrooms are mainly open during the lesson time and so the individual and separate areas can easily interact with each other. Each classroom has a balcony, and the outdoor space is also an area for learning and for leisure time. There is also acovered open air classroom which is a special benefit for teaching. In the center of the school is a stair with seat steps for meetings, communication, and school parties.
The school is very light and cosy because of the light guide through the huge windows and skylight and the use of the material wood and sand and earth toned colours.
