Vinaver square in Šabac

Vinaver Square in Šabac, designed by architect Milena Zindović and realized between October 2019 and February 2020, represents an urban transformation and an homage to the renowned expressionist writer, Stanislav Vinaver. The project began with a strategic alteration of the city's street matrix. By diverting traffic from Pop Lukina into Kajmakčalanska street, an undefined triangular intersection was converted into a pedestrian plaza at the end of Karađorđeva street, a vital axis in the city center.
At its core, the square is conceived as a spatial manifestation of Vinaver’s 1921 text, "Lightning Rod of the Universe." In this work, Vinaver imagines a layered world on a distant star, a concept translated into the landscape architecture. The foundational layer features thick grass rather than traditional paving, complemented by printed concrete with exaggerated joints that create a feeling of depth and layering.
The urban furniture continues this literary inspiration. Dark sheet metal benches adorned with striking numbers dot the plaza, with benches and water fountain specifically designed to ensure wheelchair accessibility. Additionally, 15 new trees were planted, destined to form the square's ephemeral third layer alongside lighting and sculptural elements.
The most prominent expressionist feature is a network of interconnected red structural frames. Their bold color and irregular geometry inject a sense of the unexpected into the public realm, embodying Vinaver’s goal of bringing 'new dynamic, new rhythm and new flow, into the old reality.'
Serving as the metaphorical 'Lightning Rod,' the adjacent housing tower underwent facade remodeling with architect Katarina Dubljanin. The new facade’s geometry changes dynamically as observers move, corresponding with the plaza’s structures to form a cohesive visual and symbolic unity.
Every element is deliberately ambiguous and rich with symbolic meaning, turning the entire area into a living monument to the writer.
