Villa am Bodensee

Nadine Gahleitner

The positioning and volumetric articulation of the three-level villa interpret the specific characteristics of the plot. The shape of the parcel, the neighborhood, the view, and the sunlight generate a multi-part building that zones the linear plot into different areas. Forecourt, house, terraces, and garden form a sequence of specific places that guide the residents and visitors from the street to the lake. With the height stagger and the expansion of the building, the design responds in a differentiated way to the different neighborhoods, views, and outlooks, while at the same time achieving a precise placement on the plot. The potential of the diverse spatial program unfolds in an interesting interplay of interior and exterior areas, staged to create a spatial sequence. Different building zones, which are intended for specific functions, are interwoven with each other, but at the same time create specific places with their own identity and atmosphere. The mutual positioning of the rooms responds to the different directions of views and sunlight and creates various outdoor spaces. While the living areas on the ground floor exude an open and representative character and are suitable for communal and social staying, there are places of retreat and individuality on the upper and attic floors: the sleeping area on the upper floor houses the master bedroom with an adjoining bathroom and wellness/fitness area, and in the attic, the "sunroom" with a front terrace, which invites one to stay at different times of the day. The building presents itself to its surroundings as light and flowing through the emphasis on the ceilings, projections and recesses, and the different height gradations. Inside, materials were selected that relate to the lake. A terrazzo, made with pebbles from the Rhine, creates special surfaces—integrated into the parquet floor—and particularly emphasizes the two-story air space in the entrance area. There is also a handmade light installation.
