transformation of a 1960s architect’s house

House W is the careful transformation of a distinctive architect-designed family home from the 1960s in Göfis, Austria. Located at the edge of the settlement, directly adjacent to forest and hiking trails, the house enjoys panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Originally designed as the private residence of architect Rudolf Greußing, the building is characterised by its expressive roofscape and strong geometric identity. Rather than replacing the existing structure, the project explores how the architectural qualities of the post-war period can be adapted to contemporary living. The aim was to preserve the character of the house while significantly improving spatial quality, functionality and environmental performance. The original volume and most of the spatial structure were retained. Interventions focused on a precise reorganisation of the interior and a comprehensive energy retrofit. A new staircase improves circulation and creates a more generous entrance and kitchen area, while the former office was transformed into a spacious living area connected to the landscape through carefully positioned openings. At the heart of the house, a double-height dining space is framed by a custom-designed library connecting the different levels. Built-in furniture, reading niches and integrated storage solutions respond to the unusual geometry of the existing building and support everyday family life. The building envelope was completely renewed, high-performance insulation added and all windows replaced with solid timber frames. A ground-source heat pump, underfloor heating and a roof-integrated photovoltaic system provide renewable energy. The heating demand was reduced from 154 kWh/m²a to 61 kWh/m²a, achieving energy class A+. The white rendered base remains, while the upper level is clad in new larch shingles. Roof and façade form a continuous surface, giving the house a calm and unified appearance.
