In 2019, the City Building Directorate (Stadtbaudirektion) announced an invited realization competition for the new city boathouse. With the involvement of several Institutions of the city of Graz and the state of Styria (ASVK, Naturschutz, Grünraum, Wasserrecht etc.) the framework conditions were developed that made a development in this very special place possible. The jury, awarded our the design for the building cut narrowly into the embankment area with the first prize in the competition.
The challenge was to plan the new city boathouse in a spatially and ecologically sensitive manner in the green bank of the Mur, in the middle of the historic old town of Graz. The narrow building integrated into the hillside landscape creates a wide variety of outdoor space qualities on different levels and noticeably reintegrates the Mur area into the urban space.
The basic concept was to create something more than just a simple roof. A Hybrid which enables a flexible and innovative use of space in the interior and exterior.
The placement of the building close to the edge of the Marburger Kai is essential to free up and design a generous area in front of the Mur. The roof of the building, which is barrier-free and accessible directly from the street, is fitted with plant troughs and seating areas and stepped down towards the Mur and serves as a city balcony for residents and strollers to relax as well as a spectator stand for the club activities of the "Kanu Club Graz" and "Grazer Kayak Club Wikinger".
The building’s interior includes a 90m² very openly designed and heated club area featuring an internal functional box as well as a 120m² boat storage area that can either be completely closed by sliding wooden facade elements or can be opened very flexibly.
In order to give the paddlers an optimal entry into the water, a slip-in point and an eddy groyne (Kehrwasserbuhne) have been implemented in addition to a step-in system into the river.
