The new Sotheby’s Real Estate Headquarters at Carvoeiro, Algarve, is on an existent building which, however, had already been subject to a huge subversion of its original characteristics, and at the same time, in order to save and recuperate the building having in mind the new program, an expansion of the built-up area would be necessary.

Reflecting on the theme of the rehabilitation and expansion, important to establish a synthesis between the new and the old, between tradition and modernity in the search to highlight a clear synthesis between two logics, that of the historical context and that of contemporary architecture. capable of clarifying its relationship.

The aim was to innovate but seeking to make an effective impact, capable of restoring the nature and authenticity of the region, while ensuring quality in terms of spatial configuration, and making the necessary adjustments to the contemporary needs, mainly in terms of energy efficiency.

In this sense, it seemed appropriate to resort to historical culture, to the origin and raison d’être of the most remote and ancestral forms of that region – studying in depth the Survey of Portuguese Popular Architecture – looking for a re-encounter with inherited forms in the construction of the new body, or in the definition of the new spatiality or even to correct the pathologies and subversions of existing details, such as the openings or the chimneys. In this way, it was intended to guarantee a coherent and integrated intervention in the urban fabric in which it is inserted.

With the rehabilitation of the Sotehby´s International Realty in Algarve, the office CORREIA/RAGAZZI ARQUITECTOS wins the National Urban Rehabilitation Award 2017.
