Shaping a Landmark: The Design and Construction of the Luxor Hotel and Casino

Marija Miloshevska Janakieska

The Luxor Hotel and Casino, located near the Blace border crossing in North Macedonia, is a contemporary architectural project that integrates hospitality and entertainment within a unified spatial and functional concept. Positioned on a steep and previously undeveloped terrain, the building is designed as a visible landmark, strategically attracting visitors from both North Macedonia and Kosovo.

The project is organized across multiple levels, combining casino, hotel, and service functions. A clear spatial hierarchy ensures the separation of public, private, and operational areas, allowing for efficient circulation and a high level of user comfort. The design responds to the complexity of the program by carefully balancing functionality with spatial experience.

A hybrid structural system, combining reinforced concrete and steel, was developed to address the different requirements of the building. Large-span steel elements enable open and flexible gaming areas, while a more regular reinforced concrete system supports the hotel spaces. This approach ensures both structural efficiency and architectural clarity.

The architectural expression is defined by a strong visual identity. The façade employs contrasting elements to enhance visibility and create a recognizable presence within the landscape. In parallel, the interior design emphasizes atmosphere and user experience through the use of materials, lighting, and fluid spatial forms, achieving a balance between luxury and comfort.

The project demonstrates how architecture can successfully integrate design, structure, and functionality into a cohesive solution, contributing to contemporary architectural practice and regional development.
