A place of learning that combines educational innovation, climate responsibility, and spatial identity

The School at Kiefernwäldchen understands education as a spatial and social process that extends far beyond the provision of classrooms. The design explores how a contemporary learning environment can support both individual concentration and collaborative learning while contributing to a sustainable architectural culture.

Responding to its woodland setting, the building develops a fine-grained, treehouse-like structure that integrates into the existing landscape and treats the surrounding trees as an integral part of the architectural concept. Rather than functioning as isolated units, the learning clusters form a spatially interconnected network that promotes openness, orientation, and a strong sense of belonging.

Timber was chosen as the primary construction material not only for its environmental benefits but also as an expression of an architectural approach based on resource conservation, material authenticity, and atmospheric quality. The visible structure contributes significantly to the identity and character of the building.

Particular attention was given to the design of transitional spaces between inside and outside. These spaces extend the learning environment beyond conventional classrooms and create opportunities for movement, interaction, and informal learning.

The School at Kiefernwäldchen represents an approach to educational architecture that combines sustainability, spatial diversity, and social interaction, creating a learning environment that strengthens the relationship between people, place, and nature.
