Savapark Avenue in Šabac

Milena Zindović

Realized between 2019 and 2020, Savapark Avenue marks the critical first phase of 'Savapark'—an ambitious 300-hectare revitalization of the Sava river waterfront in Šabac. Situated near the historic Šabac Fortress and a former military complex, the project transforms a once-neglected route into a vibrant, modern public corridor.
Previously, the area featured a narrow, poorly maintained path bordering an old city landfill. The reconstruction widened this route at the expense of surrounding unused areas, removing the landfill's fence and planting new trees to ecologically revitalize the space. Today, Savapark Avenue establishes a direct, high-quality pedestrian and bicycle connection between the city center and the fortress, introducing enlarged walkways and a new two-way bike lane.
The linear park is punctuated by three newly designed 'squares' that act as social nodes for gathering and relaxing. Each square boasts a distinct ambiance, varying in materialization and urban equipment, and features a custom fountain adapted to the needs of different users.
Significant structural improvements include the removal of an old wooden bridge over the Kamičak channel, which was replaced by two wide, modern steel bridges. This addition successfully activated the channel's left bank, introducing a completely new pathway. Strategically placed decking platforms and the new bridges emphasize scenic views of both the water channels and the fortress.
Environmental and pedestrian-first principles deeply guided the design. Existing greenery was meticulously preserved and complemented with new trees and tailored flowerbeds. Furthermore, parking areas now utilize permeable pavements to allow natural rainwater drainage, while elevated pedestrian crossings slow down traffic, ensuring a safe, contemporary, and highly functional public space for all citizens.
