Sabini-Grisoni Palace

The Sabini-Grisoni Palace is located in Koper's Old Town, on the eastern side of Vergerio Square, which opens to the sea to the north.
The building was rebuilt from several older buildings in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the Grisoni family lived and worked there. After the death of Count Grisoni, his wife, in accordance with his will, set up an orphanage in the building. After her death, the building was transferred to the city of Koper.

Despite some renovations in the 1980s, the building was in such a poor state before the rebuilding that only the ground-floor rooms were still partially used. Parts of the building were sagging and the roof was leaking all the way down to the ground floor.

Today, the Grisoni family's mission is once again being carried out in the building, as instead of an orphanage, it houses various social-care programmes - the Day Centre for the Elderly and the Šent Mental Health Association on the ground floor, and the Istria Counselling Centre for Children, Adolescents and Parents, with a lecture room, a hall and a meeting room, which are also open to the general public on the upper floors. The Sežana Incubator is now also located on the upper floor.

Surveys by conservators and restorers before and during the construction period revealed exceptional quality wall and ceiling paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, which led to the building being declared a cultural heritage monument of local importance during its construction as a major contribution to the cultural heritage of Koper and the entire coastal area.

During the renovation, the paintings, which were discovered to an unexpected extent, were presented "in situ" on the ceiling of the main staircase, in the lobby and on the former entrance portal on the first floor. All the remaining paintings have been properly protected so that they can be displayed at a later date.

With the concept of preserving the spirit of the palace and not just adapting an office building, the spaces
