Renovation of the Cross Chapel at Rein Abbey

Iryna Gasyanets

A branch of the archaeological museum has been established within the grounds of Rein Abbey in northern Styria, Austria. At the heart of the monastic complex stands a preserved Gothic chapel whose walls date back to 1409 and which was later incorporated into the Baroque ensemble. The project encompassed the restoration of the chapel and its unique frescoes, as well as the revitalization of its basement. The basement has been converted into a contemporary exhibition space for regional archaeological finds, while the restored chapel has regained its original function as a place of worship and now also serves as a venue for cultural and community events. Together, these interventions reconnect the chapel’s Gothic heritage with a renewed cultural role in the present day.
