Renaissance of the Saint Francis Convent in Sainte-Lucie de Tallano

The Saint Francis Convent, built in 1480 and listed as a historic monument, had fallen into ruin. Perched on a rocky promontory above the village of Tallano, it was first a defensive fortress before becoming a place of prayer and contemplation. Standing between the village and the cemetery, it overlooks the breathtaking landscape of the Alta Rocca, where mountains, ridges and changing light create an almost supernatural beauty.
Architect Amelia Tavella chose to guide its rebirth with a delicate balance: restored it without breaking with the vestiges of the past. Today, it exists in two intertwined forms. The first has been carefully restored from its original imprint, preserving the spirit and identity of the monument. The second remains a spectral presence, a ruined fragment transformed into a poetic apparition. Clothed in a luminous copper mantle, it glows with quiet magic.This new skin attaches itself to the ancient stone like a living graft.
Nature, which had protected the convent during centuries of abandonment, became an essential part of the project. Vegetation woven through the masonry was preserved, and a fig tree emerging from the façade now acts as a living structural element. Copper captures and reflects the Corsican light, forming a second skin that will weather gracefully over time while strengthening the historic fabric.
For Amelia Tavella, restoring the convent meant listening to the memory embedded in its stones. Like an archaeologist, the architect reads the traces left by time to give new meaning to the present. The intervention celebrates transformation rather than erasing it, revealing the ruin as both witness and foundation.
Today, the convent stands as a dialogue between heritage, landscape and contemporary architecture. Suspended between ruin and renewal, it has become a cathedral of light, where copper screens filter the sun like modern stained glass, magnifying the sacred atmosphere of this exceptional Corsican site.
