Re-WINE-d – A Second Fermentation for Es Sindicat

EUROPAN 18 - competition
Re-WINE-d reimagines the former wine cooperative Es Sindicat in Felanitx as a vibrant cultural and social hub, giving new life to one of Mallorca's most significant industrial heritage buildings. Rather than preserving the building as a monument to the past, the proposal transforms it into an open, multifunctional destination that reconnects the local community with its history, identity and public life.
The design is guided by a respectful dialogue between heritage and contemporary architecture. Existing structures, including the iconic fermentation tanks, are carefully preserved and reinterpreted, while new interventions remain clearly distinguishable through lightweight, reversible construction and the use of natural, locally sourced materials. Architecture, public space and landscape are conceived as one integrated experience, creating a place for culture, creativity, local craftsmanship and everyday encounters.
Sustainability is embedded throughout the proposal through adaptive reuse, circular design principles, renewable energy systems and climate-responsive strategies. By transforming an abandoned industrial landmark into a resilient civic destination, the project demonstrates how architectural heritage can become a catalyst for community, culture and a sustainable future.
