RAW Masterplan

Andrea Zickhardt

The concept for the RAW site in Berlin presents it as a vibrant, diverse urban island that builds on its existing identity of culture, participation, and community engagement. Different uses—such as leisure, culture, production, and business—coexist and are carefully organized to reduce conflicts while maintaining the site’s openness and liveliness. Flexible architectural structures of varying scales allow spaces to adapt to changing needs over time.
A central principle is preserving the site’s unique atmosphere, shaped by its industrial heritage, spontaneous vegetation, and strong community presence. Rather than creating a uniform or sterile environment, the design combines existing structures with new interventions, ensuring a balance between continuity and transformation. Open spaces are arranged as a network of interconnected areas, encouraging exploration, social interaction, and intuitive movement.
Sustainability and climate resilience are key elements. The site is envisioned as a climate-ecological zone that promotes biodiversity, integrates urban greenery, and manages rainwater through decentralized “sponge city” strategies. Trees, green roofs, and shaded areas improve the microclimate and reduce heat stress.
The program remains diverse and community-oriented, with a mix of public, semi-public, and private spaces for cultural, social, and economic activities. Distinct zones—such as the Arena, Market Hall, Music Hub, and workspaces—form interconnected “characters” that activate the site throughout the day.
Mobility prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists, while car traffic is minimized. Overall, the project aims to create a flexible, climate-positive, and socially inclusive urban district.
