The Plaza with a Fountain in the City Park of Šabac, realized between 2020 and 2021 by MZ Studio under the authorship of Milena Zindović, represents a masterful transformation of a 1970s extension into a vibrant contemporary public space. Designed within the broader 'galaxy' concept of the park—where each ambiance receives an astronomical identity like the Moon or the Milky Way—this circular plaza was creatively assigned the character of the Sun due to its shape and exposure.
Embracing this sun-inspired identity, the design evokes the warmth and relaxation of a Mediterranean summer holiday. The previously underutilized space revolves around a reimagined fountain that encourages tactile interaction with water. Rather than violent splashes, the water runs in a continuous circle over a rough bottom of river pebbles. This creates a soothing stream whose gentle murmur provides an acoustic shield, insulating the relaxing area from the loud noises of the adjacent playground and football field.
The layout elegantly emphasizes the circular motif through concrete cube pavement in two colors, integrating the plaza with the wider park context. Two orthogonal paths traverse the space, acting as small bridges over the water that guide visitors to the fountain’s 'green heart.' Surrounding the stream is inviting wooden seating, thoughtfully arranged at various heights and widths. This contrast against the concrete allows for diverse use, particularly catering to young children with lowered seating.
Adding a dramatic vertical dimension to the flat landscape is a striking steel pergola. Its arched form serves as a visual gate, establishing a contemporary entrance that mirrors an older gate at the opposite end. Partially covered in a triangulated pattern reminiscent of boat sails, it offers a venue for community gatherings.
This urban design has successfully revitalized the park's northern sector, transforming a neglected area into a vibrant, multi-generational gathering point.
