Nursery School in Muro

In Muro, nestled between the urban edge of sandstone houses and the cultivated fields of Pla de Mallorca, stands a school for children aged 0 to 3. The single-story building cuts a continuous figure on the horizon, formed by a series of shallow vaults that give rise to an undulating roof. Its glazed ceramic finish in a yellow-ocher hue harmonizes with the surrounding color palette, which connects with the sandstone and traditional roof tiles.

The building's compact and striking volume draws from bioclimatic principles to minimize energy demand. A small public plaza is configured towards the entrance; on the other sides are the patios of the south-facing classrooms, a shared courtyard to the east, and a strip of services to the north. A void at the center holds together the complex and serves as an outdoor learning space protected from the wind, around which an uninterrupted circulation route ties the various rooms to one another.

Cross ventilation and natural light are ensured by large openings to the south and by taller but more contained apertures to the north. Porches and plants contribute to solar control. The structure is based on the repetition of curved beams of laminated timber – organized in six seven-meter bays – which resolve the slope and channel rainwater through the roof itself.

The building clearly expresses its material and structural logic, showcasing textures and systems with no unnecessary cladding. The use of local low-impact materials, the concentration of thermal mass in contact with the ground, a lightweight ventilated roof, and efficient active systems result in a building adapted to the climate and with a reduced ecological impact.
