New Construction of Workshops and School Equine Facility, LFS Winklhof

Marion Gruber

The Winklhof Agricultural College, rich in tradition, enjoys an excellent image even beyond the borders of Salzburg. In the course of the architectural competition won by PLOV, the quality of the teaching operation is now to be further improved and expanded. The new construction of the workshops for wood, metal and agricultural technology and the already existing horse farm will reorganize the entire school grounds, emphasizing Winkl Castle as the future center of the school.
CITIES AND OPEN SPACE - the castle in the center.
Workshop and horse farm buildings are arranged to the east of the castle and emphasize Winkl Castle as the center of the school area. The arrangement of the riding arena axially to the castle divides the new building volumes to be erected into a northern and a southern area and moves the castle into the center of the view. In addition, the planned implementation in two construction stages is favored.
The horse farm building and workshops are formulated as single-story, courtyard-shaped buildings. Aligned building edges as well as comprehensive roof eaves of the same height weave the two new buildings into a common architectural ensemble. Surrounding green spaces are envisioned as landscaped orchards and open areas for horses.
ARCHITECTURE AND SPACE CONCEPT - Synergies and Ensemble Formation
Horse Farm. The building of the horse farm will be located in the northeastern part of the construction area in direct relation to the existing farm yard and coach house. This allows the best possible synergies in the operation (machinery, storage rooms, harnessing carriages, etc.) to be used. The riding hall in the east and the stables in the west are connected by an intermediate wing in the north and by a roofed connection in the south.
Workshops. The workshops for wood technology, metal technology and agricultural technology are grouped in an L-shape around a common workshop yard.
