MED CAMPUS LINZ – INTERIOR&FARB-MATERIALKONZEPT

Giulia Decorti

Following LORENZATELIERS winning proposal for the new Medical Faculty in Linz, Giulia Decorti was responsible for the interior design development and the color and material concept of the campus.

The project creates a new urban environment connecting the General Hospital and the University. Conceived as an open campus, it combines teaching and research facilities, offices, a library, retail spaces, and social functions around a central square, fostering exchange, communication, and academic life.

The building complex is structured into four independent volumes, each dedicated to a specific function: lecture halls, laboratories, offices, and library. This clear organization allows each area to develop its own spatial and technical identity while maintaining a coherent architectural language.

The interior concept is based on a palette of ten colors inspired by Le Corbusier’s Polychromie Architecturale. Color is used as an architectural tool to define atmosphere, orientation, and spatial perception. Ochre, yellow, and red tones express solidity and material presence; blue expands and enhances the perception of space; black is used to create depth and visual balance.

The color strategy is closely connected to the material concept and continues from the exterior into the interiors. Red tones characterize the ceramic façades and appear inside the laboratories through rubber flooring, doors, and acoustic elements. Blue tones, linked to the steel façades, are translated into office interiors through carpets and finishes. Ochre and yellow tones enrich the concrete and timber areas with warmth and tactility.

Furniture and interior details follow the principles of Architettura Povera: simple, functional, and honest. Materials are presented in their natural expression, emphasizing texture, color, and sensory qualities. The result is a coherent campus identity where architecture, interiors, and materiality support learning, research, and interaction.
