MAGAZIN Store Cologne
Réka Visnyei
A flexible store concept was developed for Magazin that translates the brand’s functional requirements and design ethos into a distinctive, striking spatial language. The new design makes the historic core – the curated selection of everyday essentials – spatially visible and immediately tangible. The result is an identity-defining spatial concept that can be applied across all locations whilst also allowing scope for local adaptations.
The store concept thrives on the interplay between three elements – stage, archive, workshop.
The DS container becomes a transformable stage, staging products and constantly redefining the space. The flexibly adaptable layout allows for different configurations – as a stage for selected products, temporary exhibitions and collaborations.
Trapezoidal sheet metal becomes a characteristic element of product presentation. It is robust, hard-wearing and deliberately understated in colour, allowing products to take centre stage. Whether container modules in the shop window, sturdy storage shelving or individual modules within the space – different forms of presentation create dynamism and allow the space to be experienced anew time and again.
The Archive reflects the origins of Magazin in the warehouse. It stands for a curated range with character: durable, honest, functional. Instead of luxury, it is values that count – design, sustainability, quality. Here, one recognises Magazin: distinctive, timeless, independent of trends. A combination of heavy-duty shelving and centre-aisle modules blends the look of warehouse shelving and display cabinets with a clear, minimalist and authentic presentation of goods.
The workshop embodies exchange, inspiration and participation – here, we contribute ideas and view design as a cultural practice: relevant, bold and participatory. Wood as a material provides a deliberate contrast. Magazin becomes tangible, and the framework is set for points of contact between customers and the team.
