low tech house F

Catharina Fineder

The house in hillside location above the Rhine valley is reduced to the necessary. Despite the small footprint of 135 m² of living space, the building still appears spacious thanks to the open floor plan on the first floor and the continuous reference to the outdoor space. It captivates with modern yet restrained design, that gives space to the view of the mountains and the valley with large windows. The beauty of the Vorarlberg landscape is an incorporated to the house.

The building was placed on the edge of the relatively large plot so that later a densification by a second house, if necessary, can take place.

The use of natural materials such as wood and slate guarantee that the house fits into the natural environment. The interior is dominated by glass and wood (larch windows and doors, oak parquet) and the colors gray, white and black. The simple yet modern form of a house with a prominent gable roof makes the house a perfect habitat for the 21st century while maintaining timeless look. Towards the hillside, the house presents itself mysteriously closed with few openings in the black slate. Towards the valley, the friendly and open facade presents itself with homely larch wood and large panoramic windows.

Adaptability of the floor plans for barrier-free use in the future was of high importance in the design process. The optimal insulation and the high proportion of glass (solar gains) keep energy consumption low. The A++ house does not need a conventional heat distribution system, it is a low-tech house. If necessary the fireplace will provide sufficient heat for the inhabitants. The generously designed PV system on the roof uses the generous sunlight of the location to generate energy. Controlled ventilation ensures optimal indoor air quality without heat loss from ventilation.
