In 2021, the Fondation de l'Armée du Salut (Salvation Army France) had the opportunity to acquire a plot from the city of Louviers in order to build a new social housing program. The specificity of the block of flats was the future inhabitants who were socially isolated and suffering psychological conditions.
The brief combined studio flats, a large common room with a fully equiped kitchen, a common laundry and administrative rooms and office spaces. As the plot is a long trapezium shape with the large side on the main road, studaré set the building up along it to create a continuous front line with the main façade. Access to the parking, arranged behind the building itself, is created via an outdoor passage way splitting the ground floor in two. This set up offered the opportunity to separate the administrative entrance and area from the tenants's hallway.
The floor plan is a very efficient rectangle shape with all flats served by a central corridor and its elevator. They are all designed to be accessible to people with disabilities ; the performances with thermoinsulation, soundproof windows and interior acoustic confort were pushed further than the legal standards.
From the urban point of view, studaré studied in detail the architectural traditions of Louviers. The street the building is erected is one main road of the city, connecting a motorway junction to the historic city center. The plot adjoins directly an hospital building including a 17th century chapel. The new façade includes elements of traditional normand architecture, with base in slate tone bricks, a cornice under the high pitch gabled roof protecting from rain drops, string courses and stucco window frames. All of the latest are yet all pared down to design, with the very large window panes and the general proportions a real contemporary architecture piece.
