The project on Lindower Straße in Berlin is based on a contemporary approach to designing and realizing architecture in a sustainable and context-sensitive way. Different needs and potentially changing requirements of future users were already incorporated into the planning, resulting in a spatial configuration that is flexible and adaptable, allowing for diversity and individual development.

Through new residential and commercial units, existing commercial courtyards in the Berlin district of Wedding were densified and expanded using hybrid timber construction. A seven-story, tower-like new building defines the perimeter of the site, establishing a new presence toward the neighboring property while complementing and harmonizing the perimeter block structure. This “tower” both integrates and marks the site; it connects spatially and aesthetically with the pavilion-like vertical extension of the adjacent historic industrial building.

The new construction and the extension form a cohesive unit through their tinted exposed timber façades and prominently emphasized large window openings. Subtly embedded yet clearly legible as an addition, they envelop and enhance the existing structure. The buildings accentuate the original fabric and articulate a new overall composition that communicates with its context and establishes a strong relationship to it.

The ensemble serves both as a striking focal point and as a respectful, sensitive contextual enhancement—a synthesis of renewal and preservation.

Sustainability was conceived holistically in this project—both in terms of materials and construction, as well as in its flexible, long-term adaptability of use. The ensemble thus represents a forward-looking approach to urban densification: an open extension of the existing fabric that strengthens its context and makes responsible architecture visible.
