LAGO II
Ulrike Tinnacher
LAGO II transforms a previously unused attic space within a late 19th-century villa in Gmunden on the shores of Lake Traunsee. Conceived as a careful form of densification within the existing building fabric, the project creates new living space without consuming additional land or altering the character of the house. The long-vacant roof space has been converted into a generous apartment that builds upon the qualities of the existing structure while adapting it to contemporary living.
The design is rooted in the unique spatial conditions beneath the roof. Rather than dividing the floor into a sequence of enclosed rooms, an open layout was developed, allowing for flexible and flowing spatial relationships. Living, working, and communal activities can adapt to changing everyday needs, creating a sense of continuity throughout the apartment.
New interventions were inserted precisely and with restraint into the existing roof structure. The original fabric remains legible and forms the spatial framework for the new program. Carefully positioned openings and visual connections establish relationships both within the apartment and with the surrounding landscape.
The material palette follows the ambition of creating a robust and durable architecture. A small number of carefully selected materials define the spaces and contribute to a calm and timeless atmosphere. The construction remains visible in many areas, maintaining a direct connection to the building and its history.
The location on Lake Traunsee strongly shapes the project. Views of the lake, the surrounding mountains, and the cultural landscape of the Salzkammergut are deliberately integrated into the apartment and accompany its sequence of spaces. The result is a living environment that embraces its remarkable setting and makes it an integral part of everyday life.
