Kindergarten and Daycare Center Krumpendorf
New Build | Competition 2022 | Completion 2025
The kindergarten and daycare center in Krumpendorf are conceived as an elongated, two-storey structure-oriented east–west and integrated into the existing topography.
The functional organization is arranged horizontally: the daycare groups, technical rooms, shared facilities, and administrative areas are located on the ground floor, while the four kindergarten groups are placed on the upper floor. Both levels are connected via a central foyer with staircase and lift. In addition, the upper floor is accessed through a separate external entrance. This dual access system relieves pressure during daily drop-off and pick-up times.
The layout follows clear operational sequences: each group room is directly connected to its cloakroom, sanitary facilities, and storage space. On the upper floor, a movement room is positioned between two group rooms and can also be directly connected to them. Generous openings allow these three spaces to be combined when needed.
All group rooms are oriented to the southwest and feature spacious, covered terraces or balconies. A large, cantilevered roof and external sun shading reduce summer overheating and extend the usable area.
The building employs a hybrid construction system: in-situ concrete is used for the core and ground floor slabs, while prefabricated timber elements are used for walls, roof, and facade on the upper floor. The ground floor features a rendered facade with external insulation, while the upper floor is clad in vertical timber. The flat roof areas are designed as green roofs, and the pitched roof sections are equipped with photovoltaic panels.
The outdoor space uses the existing topography as a play landscape, offering differentiated zones for movement, retreat, and informal learning.
Inside, wood surfaces, acoustically effective ceiling and wall finishes made of magnesite-bound wood wool and felt, as well as linoleum flooring,
