The Športni Park Ilirija in Ljubljana combines contemporary sports infrastructure with sustainable urban development and the regeneration of a significant historical site. The original Ilirija swimming complex by Stanko Bloudek from 1929 no longer met the requirements of modern competitive swimming. While the protected entrance building was preserved and integrated, a new sports complex was created with an Olympic 50-meter pool and additional sports and community functions.

Giulia Decorti developed the interior design concept as well as the color and material concept of the facility. The aim was to create a clear and coherent identity through the authentic expression of materials and a carefully balanced atmosphere.

The interior concept is based on raw and honest materials, allowing their natural qualities and textures to remain visible. Exposed galvanized steel defines the spaces and emphasizes the structural character of the architecture. The reduced material palette creates a direct connection between construction, function, and perception.

The color concept is inspired by water: three shades of blue accompany the interiors, creating a visual link to the swimming pool while enhancing spatial depth and atmosphere. In contrast, wood introduces warmth and balance into the robust material composition. Besides its aesthetic role, wood also contributes to the technical performance of the spaces by improving acoustics and comfort.

Steel, concrete, wood, and color create a dialogue between industrial character and human scale. Open spatial sequences, controlled lighting, and views towards the surrounding park reinforce the building’s identity as a public place.

The Športni Park Ilirija becomes more than a sports facility: it is an urban landmark where architecture, sport, and community come together
