House overlooking the Danube

Completed in 2021, the House overlooking the Danube is an elegant 74-square-meter residential retreat set on a steep, wooded slope in Grocka, Serbia. The project was conceived to minimize its perceptive impact on the landscape while maximizing sweeping views of the riverfront.
Built on a lower plateau to replace an old storage structure, the new guest house was carefully positioned to ensure it would not obstruct the panoramic views from the main residence located on the plateau above. This strategic placement avoided any significant disruption to the terrain and preserved the existing mature greenery.
Architecturally, the project reinterprets the "naïve" vernacular of local weekend settlements. It distills the traditional gabled archetype into a simplified, contemporary form with the roof ridge unconventionally running parallel to the shorter side. This essential, almost logo-like geometry is emphasized by a strict monochromatic palette. Dark gray brick cladding, matching roof tiles, dark gray metal frames, and hidden gutters help the compact structure virtually disappear among the trees. This turns the home's privacy into a relational code between the built environment and nature.
While the compact elevations are largely reserved to protect domestic intimacy, they open up dramatically in key areas. The ground floor features a double-height living room illuminated by roof windows, connecting to a shaded outdoor deck via a large sliding glass door. Inside, a floating steel staircase leads up to the gallery sleeping area and a 14-square-meter sun terrace "cut out" from the roof shape. Fulfilling the clients' ultimate wish, a spectacular horizontal window on the upper floor frames an unobstructed, breathtaking view of the Danube, seamlessly connecting the intimate interior with the dramatic landscape.
