House in Simrishamn

Antje Freiesleben

The guest house with studio in Simrishamn, Sweden, completes an ensemble on a long, narrow plot with a north-south orientation. A German-Swedish artist couple from Berlin and there son live here regularly additionally, they wanted an atelier space in which to work.

Hidden behind a hill, the house is almost invisible at first, only proudly presenting its broad gable wall once you circle around it. The house is built of stone, it has two parallel walls between which the roofscape stretches.

In terms of materials, the simple colors and the detailed form of the stepped gable end reference typical buildings in the region. The layout and natural lighting are ideally tailored to the specific requirements for use as both a studio and guest house. The open ground floor gives space to work and sociability. The splitted roof offers ideal light for working on the high part of the wall,
the gallery floor provides a private space: a small spatial miracle within a modest volume.
