House in Rörum
Sofia Fors
House in Rörum is located on a former apple orchard in southern Sweden, surrounded by agricultural buildings. The house takes its point of departure in the local barn typology, interpreted as a multigenerational home with a clear relationship between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape.
The house is organized around a central core that separates more private rooms from the main living spaces and establishes a clear circulation through the building. Along the central core, spaces shift from more enclosed areas into the double-height living, dining, and kitchen spaces, which form the communal center of the house. Large openings bring daylight into the interior and frame views of the surrounding landscape. The interior is structured as a sequence of spaces that vary in scale, light, and degree of openness.
The exterior is composed of white rendered façades and pitched zinc roofs, relating to the surrounding agricultural buildings. Sliding wooden elements define the façades and regulate the degree of openness, providing shading and privacy while allowing filtered daylight into the interior. When closed, they create a more protected interior; when open, they extend the living spaces towards the outside.
A restrained palette of timber, white plaster and concrete defines the interior. A custom-designed timber acoustic ceiling spans the double-height communal space, improving acoustic conditions while giving the room a warm and tactile character. Daylight, views, and the material qualities create a calm atmosphere that reinforces a close connection to the surroundings.
