House in a park
Antje Freiesleben
Set within a park-like site in Berlin-Pankow, this is the ideal location for a new SKF residential home. (transl.: Non-Profit Social Service of Catholic Women)
Spanning four floors, the building provides a home for 21 residents and 22 day visitors with intellectual and physical disabilities.
Here, independent living is made a reality: with support and assistance, each resident has their own room with an en-suite bathroom, and every two of these units share a kitchen-diner and a balcony.
The Residential Participation Act stipulates the need for specific facilities: a Snoezelen room, a communal lounge with kitchen, care bathrooms, an administrative area and various ancillary rooms.
The building extends lengthwise from north to south. It is 37 metres long and 14 or 16 metres wide.
An entrance for residents is located centrally on the east side, with a further entrance for the day activity area centrally on the west side.
Both areas are operated separately.
Walking up the wheelchair-accessible paths from Nordendstraße, one approaches the green, rough-plastered plinth, sheltered by the widely overhanging roof. Here, the exterior cladding becomes tactile: glossy green tiles accentuate the entrance.
The entire ground floor is stone, solid, a sturdy plinth. Terrazzo slabs on the floor and a green-and-white pattern on the walls welcome users and lead into the open distribution hall, the heart of the building.
The upper storeys are constructed of timber, with load-bearing walls and ceilings made of solid glued-laminated timber; large elements, thickly insulated with mineral wool, clad with red-glazed boards to protect against the weather. Prefabricated, including windows and cladding. Only the sloping protective aprons were fitted on site. They cover the joints and accommodate the sunshades. The aprons are made of corrugated cement, and their metal edging acts as a fire barrier.
The entire house is barrier-free and wheelchair accessible.
