Florasdorf am Anger (2015-2017)

The task of designing dense urbanity that provides a milieu of rural characteristics in the highly exposed area between motorway and entry road, asked the precise identification and adaptation of site-specific qualities. As a result of this, the two “types of Florasdorf” were defined: The punctual and the linear structure. Their typologies refer to the surrounding urban plot of perimeter blocks and allotment areas.
The interaction of those types and their reinterpretation aims to dissolve the dichotomy of urban density and rural landscapes – and thereby fulfill the marketing slogan “city meets village”.
High density along the sites perimeters allows a large open space that connects to the northern open-plan-structure. With their playful orientation and twisted shape, the setting of the punctual buildings guarantees the openness of this space. The possibility of including a spare site along the entry road allows to think this concept on a bigger plot.
The green verge besides the motorway was spotted as an existing green filter and was complemented by two vertical green spaces. Those garden shelves do not only function as buffers – their easily adaptable structure provides the inhabitants with additional space for gardening and community activities.
The embedding of the site in the large-scale urban structure, its communicating borders and reference to archetypical settlement structures holds high potential for socially sustainable appropriations.
Florasdorf am Anger received “gebaut 2018” Award of the City of Vienna.
Its urban concept was continued with the 2022 completed southern building parts of “Florasdorfer Spitz”.
