Erlebnis-Hus St.Peter-Ording

Andrea Zickhardt

The new “Erlebnis-Hus” in St. Peter-Ording marks the culmination of the extended beach promenade as part of an open-space project that emerged from a competition win together with the landscape architecture firm Uniola. With a focus on inclusion, it is intended to serve visitors of all ages and backgrounds as a meeting place that is both formally and functionally rooted in the local context, while also projecting a strong identity beyond the region.

The structure is inspired by the typical local stilt-house construction and reinterprets it in a contemporary way. It consists of an exposed framework of columns and beams made of glued laminated timber, into which five oversized solid timber cubes are inserted at varying heights and positions. The project’s objective was to develop a sustainable, ecological, and socially as well as touristically innovative solution that contributes to the attractiveness of the location.

Each of the five cubes has its own function: they house an analog play area, an information center with shop, a restaurant, staff offices, and sanitary facilities. The individual cubes are enclosed on three sides by a ventilated timber façade and open on one side with oversized windows, offering impressive views of the sea, the neighboring biotope, the promenade, and the distant landscape. A large number of terraces and staircases make the building accessible and usable on multiple exterior levels, while a reinforced concrete core with an elevator and service spaces stabilizes the emblematic timber structure. Play elements integrated into the wooden “sculpture” invite visitors to interact with the building and encourage play in, on, under, beside, and around it.

In this way, the building remains lively at all times of day and throughout the year—inside and out, in constant motion—continually rediscovered and appropriated by its users.
