DOPPELGÄNGER reloaded - Hölzel-Haus, Stuttgart

The architecture label THE BAUKUNST DYNAMITES offers a novel answer to the question of how artist Adolf Hölzel's historic house and studio in Stuttgart could be carefully restored while also being converted for the tasks of a modern foundation. The Hölzel-Haus is extended with an annex that itself becomes the design theme: the 1905 original is copied, shifted, and then re-inserted as a copy at the required location. The resulting annex follows the existing building like a shadow, becoming its DOPPELGÄNGER. The form and position of the DOPPELGÄNGER become visible through its materiality as an overlay. The copy follows the original down to the last detail — the only difference between old and new is that the annex appears completely discolored. The foundation building thus blends harmoniously into the surrounding villa district while still creating an architectural landmark.
The diverse spatial program is brought to life through a multifunctional concept comprising an art school, exhibition areas, an archive, and a studio apartment for fellows. The creative act of copying forms and their repetition or recomposition is well known in contemporary art and abstract painting and is playfully transferred to architecture in the Hölzel-Haus. The result is a juxtaposition of past and future — a symbol for the artist's work and for the foundation's field of tension and self-understanding.
The doppelgänger sits as a shell in front of the existing structure, creating an in-between space with unusual perspectives. Inside, alongside the discoloration concept, the engagement with Adolf Hölzel and his artistic work continues. A black-and-white photo wallpaper in the entrance area shows the artist with his students, the so-called „Hölzelkreis“. On the gallery level in the annex, a black-and-white portrait of the artist in his studio is on display. In the stairwell within the existing building, colorful dancing figures accompany visitors up to the roof.
