Dominique Perrault’s iconic landmark in Vienna bears a unique appearance including the tower and its close surrounding. The original design incorporated as well special windumbrellas that helped to reduce and redirect the vertical winds in order to make the area next to the tower pleasent for all users. The initial umbrellas were to be replaced in order to hold against the winds that were getting heavier throughout the years. The client’s aim was to rethink and redesign them in a way that they adjust to the identity of the tower but at the same time enhance the urban landscape capabilities of the close proximity and allow people to enjoy the tower front.
The new design of the umbrellas analysed the wind situation and redesigned the height and scale of the items against the foreful winds. The design went through iterations between 3D design and physical model with wind channel testing. The umbrellas got an expanded metal coverage that helps the wind to dissolve through its small holes. The design reimagined the setting with a flexible and modular furniture configuration where people can gather under the shade of the umbrellas in a playful way.The sitting and standing modules are placed in a way that small or larger groups can gather for lunch breaks or even outdoor meetings with the integrated outlets. Allowing people to spend more time outside in a professional enviroment gives an answer to the past years of covid times. The furniture groups are highlighted with dynamic wind umbrellas that differ in shape from the rest and will have additional climbing plants grown on the spline of them. Furnitures are made of wooden seating, expanded metal fronts and messing details. The messing divisions have a visual continuation in the foundation of the umbrellas through the messing inlays in the concrete and the logo of the tower.
