The federal office of the German Alpine Club (DAV) has moved into its new headquarters in the former headquarters of the Langenscheidt publishing
house: a four-storey administrative building that was designed by Kurt Ackermann and Partner Architects and completed in 1985. Two additional
office floors were added as part of the renovation measures. A wooden structure, visible both inside and outside, wraps around the existing building, which has been reduced to its stone skeleton, and rising four storeys, becomes a vertical natural garden. The wooden structure is accessible for maintenance and façade cleaning. It also supports the sun blinds in front of the building to provide shade on the south side. On the north façade, facing the square, the wooden structure becomes an airy entrance foyer and a natural thermal buffer, with stairways leading upwards between plant troughs. The green zone extending from the urban space to this point ends in the vertical garden, which is visible from afar. The wooden post-and-beam façade in front of the reinforced concrete skeleton structure allows flexible subdivision into room sequences ranging from individual offices to meeting rooms.
Rooms, with sizes from small to large, and from closed to completely open, have a height of approximately 2.7 metres. The existing reinforced
concrete ceilings remain visible, while technical, lighting and acoustic elements are suspended as required. On the new wooden floors, the load-bearing
construction of the wooden ribbed ceiling already provides good sound insulation and free space for lighting and technical elements.
