Creative and Innovative Multifunctional Center Ložionica
Dunja Nedeljkovic
The Ložionica project represents the transformation of a historic industrial structure into a contemporary multifunctional hub, based on the principle of preservation through adaptive reuse. The original reinforced concrete structure is fully retained, allowing the interior to remain open, continuous, and spatially fluid, emphasizing the monumentality and rhythm of the existing framework.
The architectural concept is driven by the building’s semicircular geometry and its relationship with the former railway turntable. This radial logic is translated into the interior organization, where programmatic zones are arranged in interconnected segments, enabling flexibility, clarity of movement, and spatial continuity.
A key new intervention is a lightweight, steel, yellow arched gallery inserted within the existing structure. Conceived as a contemporary layer, it clearly distinguishes new from old while maintaining respect for the historical fabric. The gallery “floats” within the space, generating a system of terraces and workspaces of varying typologies, supporting diverse modes of use—from co-working and workshops to presentations and informal gatherings.
The project integrates multiple complex functions within a unified spatial system. These include a central exhibition and entrance hall, a technologically advanced multifunctional “Black Box” designed for a wide range of cultural events, and a Food & Beverage zone that maintains visual continuity with both the interior and the surrounding landscape.
A defining element of the project is the use of large gabion panels, filled with railway stone, which mediate between interior and exterior. They function simultaneously as environmental filters, light modulators, and symbolic references to the site’s industrial heritage.
Through its architectural and technical approach, Ložionica establishes a balance between preservation and innovation, creating a highly adaptable cultural infrastructure while reinforcing the identit
