Complete Demolition and Reconstruction of the Auguste Benoît Nursery and Primary School (15 Classrooms, Catering Facility, Motor Skills Room, Multi-Purpose Hall) in Cabriès

The Saint-Pierre School in Cabriès has been rebuilt as part of a broader landscape and urban design strategy for the surrounding public spaces, conceived in continuity with the site's natural topography. The project settles into the landscape like a contour line, establishing a constant dialogue with its surroundings.
Designed in close relationship with the hilltop village, the neighbouring houses and the steep terrain, the building both reveals and belongs to the wider landscape. Its organic form appears to rise naturally from the ground before merging back into it, following the logic of the site's contours.
The architecture bears the imprint of its setting through a material language inspired by the geological strata of stone, expressed in particular through a façade treatment reminiscent of stained glass. This approach also embodies a pedagogical ambition: understanding one's environment as a way of understanding one's place within it.
The building emerges as an almost fossil-like presence, both familiar and unexpected, existing in quiet harmony with the landscape that surrounds it.
This project reflects Amelia Tavella’s search for a balance between a contemporary architectural gesture and the memory of what already exists. Her architectural language is rooted in the sensuality of materials, shaped by the craftsmanship of skilled artisans and by a continuous dialogue with the history of each site. She seeks to create rational, generous spaces through contextual materials that belong naturally to their environment. Schools, places of learning, culture, and shared experience occupy a special place in our lives. They are spaces where architecture can nurture curiosity, transmit memory, and strengthen the relationship between people and the landscapes they inhabit.
