Canaletto & Bellotto

The exhibition design for "Canaletto & Bellotto: Zwischen Venedig, London und Wien" (2025–2026) at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna centers on 18th-century urban landscapes as a narrative thread. The architectural concept translates the dynamic movement of Venetian canals and great European rivers into a fluid, immersive spatial experience.
Inside the monumental Hall VIII, the layout is shaped by a sequence of impressive, three-meter-high curved walls that guide visitors intuitively and direct their gaze toward the master painters' vedute. The long main room is harmoniously divided into three zones: two square outer areas and a central circular space that stages the transition from Dresden to Vienna. To elegantly integrate display cases without forming enclosed chambers, these sinuous structures strategically slope down to ninety centimeters, maintaining the visual unity of the historic hall.
The color palette plays a key symbolic and narrative role: an intense midnight blue (Stiffkey Blue) coats the curved elements as a clear homage to water and its dense shadows, while a warm sand tone (Elephant's Breath) covers the remaining surfaces. This deliberate contrast reflects the materiality of period city architecture and allows the colors of the paintings to vividly stand out.
