The extension of the PHTL / LFUI-UMIT / Poly / TFBS campus in Lienz is shaped by a highly constrained site. The River Isel to the south, the steep slope to the north, Pfarrgasse to the east, and the Zauchenbach stream between the existing buildings significantly limit development opportunities. In addition, the campus faces a shortage of parking spaces.
A slender building volume elevated on columns above the river promenade connects all four schools and accommodates the LFUI-UMIT facilities and the PHTL extension. Positioned along the Isel, it creates a distinctive identity for the campus while preserving the valuable riverside tree population.
By slightly raising the new building above the existing basement and parking level, a generous public plaza is created: the new campus courtyard, or forum. This central outdoor space links directly to the campus entrances and the TFBS building and provides room for gatherings and events.
The atrium, dining area, buffet, mechanical engineering laboratory, lecture halls, and learning center form an open and interconnected learning landscape. Designed around openness, clarity, orientation, connectivity, and daylight, the campus serves as a shared meeting place for pupils and students. During warmer months, the atrium can open directly to the courtyard and southern outdoor areas.
The new two-storey campus acts as the central hub for all four schools. Two bridges connect the new structure to the existing buildings, ensuring seamless circulation. Beneath the elevated courtyard, a naturally ventilated parking deck accommodates vehicles, freeing outdoor areas from surface parking and making them fully available for campus life.
The energy strategy focuses on passive optimization through the use of exposed thermal mass and natural summer shading provided by the mature riverside trees. The new building is designed as a steel-frame structure with long-span trusses and recessed columns, creating a clear structural expression.
