The new C2C fire station in Straubenhardt, designed by wulf architekten, sets a groundbreaking example as a circular building for sustainable public infrastructure. This public building is among the first in Germany to be consistently planned and constructed according to the Cradle to Cradle® principle.

The design is based on the conscious use of resources and the application of healthy and circular materials. On behalf of the client, Daniela Schneider, as a specialist planner for circular construction, initiated and oversaw the planning and execution process for EPEA GmbH-Part of Drees & Sommer.

The innovation lay in the consistent selection and monitoring of circular materials. For the first time, Daniela Schneider, reviewed the details prepared by the architects and specialist planners for circularity-specific parameters and worked with them to further develop these detail. A total of 79 components and 248 materials were assessed for material health, material purity, separability and ease of disassembly over the entire life cycle.

Through this screening process, project participants received targeted coaching, and the goal of circularity was firmly embedded in the design and materials. The aim was to establish circular loops while also creating healthy indoor air quality.

A central component of the concept was the digital building materials passport. It documents all materials and preserves key information regarding ease of disassembly to enable subsequent return to the biological or technical cycle. In the spirit of urban mining, the building has become a valuable repository of raw materials that will be available to future generations.The project demonstrates that, through innovative processes, a fully circular construction approach can be achieved even for projects in the public sector.
