Brockmann Elementary School

Iris Rampula-Farrag

A new “centre” is created by a one-storey extension around a central courtyard on the first floor, connecting corridors. This central courtyard, which can be opened during warm seasons, serves as a break area and outdoor classroom. The attic is expanded, and a new reading tower in the middle wing creates a center for the top floor.
The extension above the gym, designed like a "tree house," echoes the old building's projections and complements the park on the north side. The facade pattern mimics tree leaves. The attic, expanded to match the new extension, includes classrooms and a reading room, with wide aisles serving as open learning zones. Strip windows and glass roofs provide lighting.
A new marketplace on the 1st floor includes all-day care and a multifunctional dining room. A leisure room, adjacent to the courtyard and multifunctional room, offers additional space. The attic expansion on the 2nd floor creates a teachers' cluster with four classrooms and the reading tower, which houses the library and can serve as a music room or meeting room.
The building’s reorganization around the central market square, terrace area, and reading tower, along with the new teachers' cluster, ensures efficient school operations. The extension and attic conversion use low-energy construction. An elevator provides barrier-free access to all floors, and a new portal with reconfigured stairs allows access from the southern courtyard. Parking spaces are reduced, creating approximately 320m² of new green space.
